CHAPTER 6
"We should do something about that ankle," Ben said.
Ethan had expected nightmares about bears and wolves, but his sleep had been deep and uninterrupted. He'd woken up the next afternoon feeling strangely relaxed, a mood that only increased when Ben dropped a giant plate of toast in front of him.
He paused in the act of buttering his toast to give his ankle an experimental flex under the table, then went back to his breakfast. "It's just a sprain, it'll heal up in a few days." It stung when he moved it, but he could still wiggle his toes. He'd had worse. No-one clambered up and down rusty fire escapes and over chain-link fences without stumbling a few times.
He licked strawberry jam off of his butterknife, then frowned when a dollop of it landed on his sleeve. "I'm more worried about getting a change of clothes, to be honest. This sweater's getting kind of ripe."
Ben somehow managed to look authoritative and disapproving even with a bird's nest of bedhead and wearing the old t-shirt he'd slept in. He bit into his own toast, rolling his eyes as Ethan tried to suck strawberry stains out of his sleeve. "You can borrow something of mine."
"Uh, no offense, Superbear, but I don't think your stuff is exactly going to fit me."
"There's always belts," Ben ventured tentatively.
"Sure. Have you got about a dozen? Because that's what it's going to take to keep one of your giant shirts in place on me. "
"You ass. Well, what have you got in mind?"
"There's got to be a store or something in town, right?" Ethan paused. "Uh. I don't want to— I probably shouldn't use my card right now, but I can always pay you back later. I mean, if you don't want to, that's cool, I—"
Ben waved him away. "It ain't a problem."
A change of clothes was appealing, but the idea of going out in public without a shower first wasn't. As Ben finished up and went to tend to his rescue animals, Ethan wolfed down his breakfast and limped to the bathroom.
Clambering up into the wrought-iron claw-footed tub with his sprained ankle gave Ethan a moment's pause, but he managed to get in without completely assassinating his dignity. Ben's shampoo was a no-nonsense sort of affair, but the bar of soap in the shower caddy was pink and flowery. Ethan gave it an experimental sniff, then grinned. Strawberry? He was pretty sure he could pin that one on Eve.
As he fiddled with the shower taps and began to wash, his mind drifted. It was a pretty nice setup than Ben had going. The hand-built cabin had the whole man-of-the-woods thing going for it, but Eve had clearly insisted on forcing some modern niceties on him whether he liked it or not.
When he thought about it, though, it was a little disconcerting. Julian hadn't ever even been in the same universe as the World's Best Adoptive Dad award, but his house reflected his life outside of it.
